The miracle of the Camu Camu Fruit

HISTORY

Camu Camu is the common name for Myrciaria dubia - a small Amazon fruit that has the highest vitamin C content of any plant in the world. The main cultivation area is located near the Peruvian border with Brazil, where the 2-8 meter high shrubby tree thrives in the swamps and floodplains of the rainforest. The centre of origin seems to be located between the lakes Sahua and Supay, both tributaries of the Ucayali River, near the Jenaro region of Peru. The watery habitat of the plant means that the fruit is an ideal food source for fish. They help spread this crop. The name Camu Camu probably comes from the "Camu" sound that fish make when they pick the floating fruits from the water surface, "bloop". 

The fruit itself is between 10-12 millimeters in diameter and has a fleshy and soft texture. The color can vary from reddish brown to dark purple, due to the high concentration of anthocyanins (natural antioxidant pigments) in the fruits skin. The inside of the fruit consists of a yellow pulp and usually contains two seeds. There is no historical evidence that Native Amazons were aware of the power of this super berry, it was only in 1957 that Peru's Ministry of Health conduct the first nutritional analysis of the fruit. This analysis determined that the fruit contains more vitamin C than any other known vegetable source.

Due to its very sour taste, the Camu Camu fruit is usually not eaten by itself. In South America, the pulp is traditionally blended into a naturally sweetened juice, and since the fruit's benefits have become known, it has been popular practice for sprinkling it on ice, jam and yogurt, super delicious! 


PROCESSING

Camu Camu is a very productive plant. In the wild, it has been found to provide 9,000 to 12,000 kg of fruit per hectare. The growth period of the fruit is usually between November and March. It is a resilient plant, and adapts very well to its environment, allowing cultivation to expand from the plants native habitat. 

Peru harvests 6,760 tons of fresh fruit every year (this number is growing) and many new trees are planted as part of a reforestation initiative by the Peruvian government. They do this to support the continued growth of the export market and to help the local people maintain their way of life.

Our Camu Camu is harvested directly with canoes during Peru's rainy season - a challenging process, as the land is flooded and many of the fruits are submerged under water. At our supplier's collection centre, all fruit undergoes careful inspection and is washed before peeling and squeezing. The pulverised Camu fruit is then placed in a custom-designed drying machine, which slowly extracts moisture at a constant temperature below 45 ° C, this is known as freeze drying. The dried Camu Camu can then be ground into a fine powder, which is carefully tested before packaging to ensure that it is free from all potentially harmful microbes.

As with all vitamin C-rich fruits, the time between harvesting and processing is crucial: once picked, Camu Camu should be placed directly into coolers or they will immediately begin to lose their nutritional value. Through special investigations, we have identified the best source available for this product. We only import our Camu Camu from a supplier who understands the importance of using proper processing methods to preserve the nutritional value of this unique product. The product is never exposed to temperatures above 45 ° C, and the most advanced freeze drying technology is used in processing, to ensure that the fruit's high vitamin content is preserved. The Camu Camu powder that we sell is therefore of the highest possible quality.
